Oral Sedation
Oral sedatives are swallowed in oral pill form, typically before an appointment. We’ll provide you with the prescription and instructions about when and how to take them. Once they have taken effect, we can begin treatment. Oral sedatives do not wear off quickly and can make it dangerous to operate a motor vehicle, so it’s important to have a ride to and from your appointment.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous oxide is delivered through a mask placed over the nose and mouth. Commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” this medication takes effect quickly to relax a patient. The sedative wears off when the gas is removed, making the effects very temporary.
IV Sedation Dentistry
In IV sedation, a sedative medication is delivered directly into the bloodstream. This allows the medication to take effect quickly, relaxing the patient’s mind and body. IV sedation can remain in the bloodstream after the IV is removed, so be sure to arrange for a ride home after your appointment.
