When one or more teeth are missing and surrounding gums and bone are healthy, dental implants can be a valuable long-term replacement. Implants can be created for a single restoration with a crown or used to support a larger restoration, such as a bridge or denture. 

What is a Dental Implant?

While many restorations rely on nearby teeth, gums, or the remaining natural tooth to secure them in place, dental implants are designed to provide a complete restoration, including artificial tooth roots. The dental implant is made from biocompatible materials which allow it to integrate with the bone over time to create stable support. 

The Dental Implant Process

Dental implants require a careful evaluation of the health of your gums and bone structure, both of which are required for a successful implant. The implant post is placed below the gumline to act as artificial tooth roots. Once the healing process is complete, an abutment (connector piece) and tooth-shaped restoration are added to the top of the post, completing the treatment. This process can take several months, but results in a long-term solution to tooth loss.
