Inlays and Onlays in Port Coquitlam
When a tooth is damaged too severely for a filling, but does not require a complete dental crown, our dental team may recommend an inlay or onlay. These are restorations created in a dental laboratory, designed to sit on top of a molar to protect and strengthen the tooth. Inlays and onlays are custom created, restoring the tooth so it blends in with the nearby natural teeth.
Inlays vs. Onlays
Both inlays and onlays are secured over the biting surface of the teeth. While inlays cover the areas between the cusps of the teeth (the ridges), and onlay may include part or all of the cusps. We’ll determine whether you need an inlay or onlay depending on the extent of the damage or tooth decay.
How Inlays & Onlays Are Placed
Inlays and onlays are created in a dental laboratory using detailed impressions of the tooth to be repaired. These impressions are taken after we prepare your tooth for the restoration during an initial appointment. Once prepared, we secure the restoration to the tooth and check your bite. You may experience a slight change in your bite after the restoration is complete, but this feeling should fade within several days.
